CHAPTER EIGHT
Surprising Sage and the house a few mornings later, Kaden woke early and cooked fluffy omelets, piles of crispy bacon, hash browns, and fresh coffee. He leaned against the counter and smiled when Sage, Charlie, and Lorraine entered the kitchen to find the fresh breakfast.
“What is all this?” Sage asked.
“It’s a thank you for accepting me into your home for the last few days. I learned how to cook at the private school. One of the few things I enjoyed there,” Kaden said and pointed everyone to their seats. He filled their plates and cups.
With a bright cheer to the morning, they sat and ate breakfast together.
“I’m impressed. This was delicious,” Sage said after he cleaned his dish and multiple cups of coffee.
“Good to know someone else appreciates it.”
“I’ll take care of the dishes, boys. Go on to school,” Lorraine said.
The boys looked at each other.
“There’s no need to get to school, Miss Lorraine. We finished our last exam. You have the option to skip the rest of the days if you turn in books. I didn’t want to stick around, so I did it all before the final,” Sage said.
Sipping from another full cup of coffee, Kaden lifted the mug. “Same here.”
“Are the graduation ceremonies next week?” Lorraine asked.
“Yes, but I’m not planning on attending. I wrote a letter about my intentions for the front office,” Sage said.
“I did the same. Had to fill out some form,” Kaden said.
“What about your diplomas?”
“They’ll be mailed to us.” Sage gulped the last of his coffee. “I need to get outside and start the morning chores.”
“I don’t know about this, boys. You deserve to walk across the stage with the others,” Lorraine said.
“I’m fine, Miss Lorraine. Since Mama got sick, I knew I wouldn’t walk my graduation.” Snagging his old ball-cap, Sage tugged it over his head. “I need to get to the horses. Charlie, I’ll see you outside to meet with the others.”
Charlie lifted his mug.
Kaden tapped his thumb against the table. He followed Sage out of the kitchen. He snatched the dark Stetson he left on the counter and carried it with him. “What about me?”
Sage stopped and looked at him. He made sure they reached the somewhat privacy of the living room. “What do you mean about you?”
“Put me to work. I’m staying here, so I might as well help. I know my way around the ranch. I used to work with our former foreman, Stephen, before Dad fired him. Please, give us this chance to get back together.” Kaden traced his finger against Sage’s arm.
Sage glanced behind Kaden and met his eyes. “Yeah, I wanted to give us a chance since we were kids.”
“How about at the swimming hole?”
“What about the summer at the swimming hole? You mean before I left for the shows?”
Kaden waited, rocked back on his heels. “I know you were watching me at the swimming hole and not those idiot girls with the bouncing boobies.”
Sage narrowed his gaze.
“Ah-ha! I knew it,” Kaden said with a hoot of laughter.
